Whether you have been planning your move for two weeks or two months, you will experience a big sigh of relief once the movers leave, and you are unpacked. However, before you get too cozy on the sofa, there are a few chores you should take care of right away before you either forget or get too busy to do them after a move.
Pest ProofIf your house has been sitting empty for a while there may be a lot of critters and creepy crawlers that have moved in. You will want to spray a nontoxic product in the basement, around doors and windows, along baseboards, etc. You may actually want to do this prior to moving in, if you are able to. If you suspect mice, place a few live traps down to let them go outside. If your home is brand new, but you want to make the environment less desirable to insects, there are a lot of essential oils that will serve this purpose, without filling the air with harsh chemicals. For example, peppermint oil repels spiders.
Many have success with eucalyptus, too.
Write Moving ReviewsThere is a very good chance that you read a lot of moving reviews when you were trying to decide which moving company to hire. Companies rely on reviews to stand out from their competition, and other folks just like you rely on reading about the experience other people had. Take the time to write moving reviews after a move. If you hired a separate packing service and another company to handle your piano or grandfather clock, write moving reviews for all services.
Run Empty LoadsYou probably cringe at the thought of running the dishwasher or washing machine empty and wasting all that water, but if the appliances have been sitting there, you want them clean before they are used. Even if the appliances belong to you it is a good idea to run a small load empty to make sure everything is hooked up properly.
Inspect Belongings
If you are like many, you will unpack the basics and leave the rest to do later after a move. This is fine, but you want to at least inspect your belongings. Open the box of china from your grandmother to make sure there is nothing broken. Plug in and turn on that spare television, and make sure all the coins are in your coin collection box. Keep in mind that claims have to be filed within a certain amount of time, so it is important to not put this off too long.

Cover the Windows
Maybe you haven’t even thought about buying window treatments yet, but that is no excuse for empty windows. You don’t want a thief to be able to look in and see a box of video games or a new laptop by a window. Hanging sheets with thumbtacks is better than nothing. You can even buy some clearance dark fabric from the fabric store to tack up there for now.

Grocery Shop
Pizza is fine the first night, but you want to get to the grocery store as soon as possible after a move. You don’t have to do your normal shopping either, just get some basics to get you through a few days until you have time to do more thorough shopping. Besides, eating out for every meal woulds be quite expensive.
